Long Beach, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team had the winning run at the plate in the top of the ninth inning with one out but Bulldog rally fell short as Long Beach State hung on for the 2-1 win Tuesday evening at Blair Field.

The loss drops the Bulldogs to 28-24 while Long Beach State improved 28-17. Both teams combined to use 16 pitchers as Fresno State used seven and Long Beach State nine. The seven Bulldog pitchers combined to allow only three Long Beach State hits while striking out eight batters. The Dirtbag pitchers allowed only five Fresno State hits.

Steve Detwiler had two hits for Fresno State while Danny Muno, Ryan Overland and Danny Grubb each had one.

Trailing 2-0 with one out, Tommy Mendonca was hit by a pitch. He was then driven in on a single by Detwiler. That would be the closest the Bulldogs got as Bryan Shaw earned the save by retiring the final two batters.

To get the win Long Beach State scored a run in the second and one in the fourth inning.

"Join the State - Fresno State"The Bulldogs return home for their final home series of the season when they play host to San Jose State beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
