FRESNO, Calif. - Matt Ryan joined the Bulldogs this year after transferring from the College of the Canyons out of Santa Clarita, Calif. With three yeas of eligibility left in Division 1 golf, this sophomore looks to achieve a lot at Fresno State.

In his fall season at Fresno State, Ryan has already had two top ten finishes including a tie for eighth at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational. Ryan also shot a low round of 66 in the third round to tie for seventh at the Food4less Pacific Invitational. With a solid start to his sophomore year, Ryan looks to be a great asset to the Fresno State men's golf team.

Learn more about Matt Ryan in the following Q&A session.

Why did you pick Fresno State?
I picked Fresno State because of the great coach, facilities, overall athletic program, and the college atmosphere.

When did you start playing golf?
First time I ever went to a driving range I was two years old; I started playing golf when I was five years old. I didn't pick it up in a serious manner until I was a senior in high school.

If you weren't playing the sport you are now, which sport would you want to play?
Well I have always had an unbelievable passion for football, but the "cards I was dealt" would have to deal with gaining 40 pounds and having a late five-inch growth spurt.

What is something surprising most people don't know about you?
Other than having an identical twin brother I really enjoy air-soft (war-based role play) because of all my close friends who are the best friends anyone could ask for.

What is the best part of being a college athlete?
Just being a college athlete... it's hard to explain, just the atmosphere of being able to hold your head high when the school is proud of you. Knowing that I am here to grow and become even better, and have people around me with the same goal.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy visiting my wonderful girlfriend and friends back home, watching football, and maybe playing a little bit. I also like video games and the beach.

What is your most embarrassing sports moment?
Don't really have one; if I do I will be sure it never happens again!!!

Who are our favorite sports heroes?
I really like Chris Dimarco because he knows how to be a family man and he still obtains and shows the fans his unique passion of the game; he is an awesome competitor. I also like Jason Gore because we come form the same high school and he was the golfer everyone in our valley looked up to when I was growing up: and he is one of the most genuinely kind men you will ever meet.

What's your favorite movie?
I like all comedies but four in particular... Dodgeball, Zoolander, Starsky and Hutch, and You, Me, and Dupree: pretty much ANY movie with Ben Stiller or Owen Wilson.

What has changed since you came to Fresno State?
The way I interact with people around me; I enjoy getting to know new people. I really enjoy the "nice-ness" of Fresno, everyone is very friendly, and you can tell when someone is not from Fresno because they have to get used to the friendly-family atmosphere.

What do you want to do after you graduate?
I would like to move on to the PGA Tour and try to maintain an improving golf career.

What is the highlight of your sports career?
Shooting 66 in the final round of the Coombs Cup to win, and virtually earn a scholarship to this wonderful University. Also, winning the Southern California CIF championship in football my senior year. Hopefully I can make new ones this year!

What is your favorite food?
My favorite food is French fries.

Most missed memory?
Playing high school football.

Favorite television shows?
Fresh Prince of Bel-air, LOST, The Unit, and South Park

What CD is in your player right now?
Rise Against, and a mix of 80's classic rock (for morning work-outs; THE ONE and ONLY Mike Villanueva).

What is the last movie you watched?
Scarface - Danny Hoffenberg does a great impression.

What is your dream job?
PGA Tour.

What is your most valued possession?
My golf clubs... The 931 Phil Mickelson Titleist Irons.

The Bulldogs will host their Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic March 12-13 at the Sunnyside Country Club.
