FRESNO, Calif.- - Fresno State women's basketball coach Adrian Wiggins has announced the signing of Kayla Sanders out of Pflugerville High School in Pflugerville, Texas. Sanders will come to Fresno in the fall of 2008.
"Kayla is a very intelligent and quick two-guard," Wiggins said. "She has a great outside shot and she has competed on a high level nationally on the AAU circuit. We are excited for her to join our program and more importantly gain a degree from Fresno State."
Sanders is entering her senior year at Pflugerville. She has helped lead her high school to three District championships and an impressive 93-18 record. As a freshman she was a guard on a team that advanced to the 2004-05 state semi-finals. That year she lettered and earned Academic All-District honors.
As a sophomore she was the starting shooting guard who led her team to the area finals. She garnered Class 15-5A All-District honors and was named to the All-Tournament team of the Hays Rebel Classic and the Mike Springer's Texas Basketball Magazine's All-State Team.
In Sanders junior year she led the Panthers to the area finals where she was named to the 14-5A All-District and Academic teams. She averaged 11.2 points and shot 41 percent from the field last season.
Sanders was coached by Jerald Wrightstil and Clarrisa Davis-Wrightsil on the Team Xpress AAU team.
Her parents are Ron and Cathy Booker of Pflugerville and Ricky Sanders of Houston, Texas.
Sanders said she signed with Fresno State because of the way the team bonds as a unit and for how the coaches' respect and support their players. She felt like coach Wiggins run and gun offense fits her style of guard play.
