FRESNO, Calif. - In an 11-inning battle at the WAC home opener vs. Nevada, the Bulldogs fell 2-0 in a pitchers duel between freshman Morgan Melloh of the Bulldogs and Katie Holverson of Nevada. Melloh ended with 13 strikeouts and Holverson with 11.
The Bulldogs first hit of the game came in the third, a double to center by Ashley White to improve her hitting streak to a team-high 12 games.
Fresno State and Nevada complete the series on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Bulldog Diamond. Both games can be heard live on 790 ESPN Radio the Deuce with Christian Lukens calling the action.
Jenna Cervantez got the `Dogs second hit of the game, a single to center. She would advance to second on a sacrifice fielder's choice that also sent White to first.
Haley Gilleland hit a bloop single with one out in the bottom of the sixth. She would then steal second and third, her 15th and 16th stolen bases of the season to tie her for third in a single season.
Aja Scheuber would reach first on an error by the Nevada third baseman in the bottom of the ninth to lead off the inning. Michelle Palazuelos would enter to pinch run for her and she would reach second on a fielder's choice that sent Andrea Ortega to first.
Nevada would strike in the top of the 11th, a solo home run to center field by Vanessa Briones. The Wolf Pack would add one more for the 2-0 win.
Melloh falls to 23-4 on the year while Holverson improves to 12-5 and the Wolf Pack are now 27-13 and 6-1 in WAC play. The Bulldogs are 2-1 in the WAC and 34-6 overall.
It was the Bulldogs third extra inning game of the season. They won the first at the San Diego Classic, 3-0 over James Madison. They then fell 1-0 in 10 innings to Houston on March 11. At two hours and 38 minutes, it was the longest game of the season for the Bulldogs.
